The story blurs reality and fantasy by narrating the impossible 1894 level in the same calm, factual voice as an ordinary commute, then setting solid “proof” beside a rational dismissal so that neither reading is allowed to win.

Finney makes the fantastic feel factual. Charley’s slip into 1894 is reported with the same matter-of-fact detail as his daily journey through Grand Central: he simply loses his way among corridors and stairs and comes out on a third level, described with documentary precision — a smaller room, an old wooden information booth, a clerk in a green eyeshade and sleeve protectors, dim open-flame gaslights, brass spittoons, a derby-hatted man with a handlebar moustache, a small Currier & Ives locomotive, and a newspaper, The World, dated June 11, 1894. Such exactness makes the impossible hard to dismiss. At the same time the story supplies a rational counter-voice: Charley’s psychiatrist friend calls the third level a “waking-dream wish fulfillment” born of modern insecurity.
