The Tiger King, Jilani Jung Jung Bahadur, is defined by vanity and obstinacy. Told at birth that a tiger will cause his death, he makes killing a hundred tigers the sole purpose of his reign. He is despotic: he bans everyone else from hunting tigers on pain of losing all their property, doubles the land tax in a fit of rage, and dismisses many officers — even telling his dewan to resign for daring to warn him of unrest. He is cunning yet self-deceiving — he pacifies a threatening British officer with fifty diamond rings costing three lakh rupees, marries into a tiger-rich state merely to keep killing, and is easily fooled by the dewan's staged hundredth kill, never knowing his bullet missed.
