Rather than let the British officer hunt his tigers, the Maharaja bought his way out of the crisis by sending fifty costly diamond rings to the officer's wife — a three-lakh-rupee bribe that reveals his obstinate vanity and the appeasement of colonial power.

A high-ranking British officer, fond of hunting tigers and of being photographed with his kills, wished to hunt in Pratibandapuram. The Maharaja obstinately refused, rejecting even the compromise that the officer need only be photographed while the king did the actual killing. By thwarting a British officer, he put his very throne in danger. Yet instead of yielding on the hunt, he and the dewan wired a famous Calcutta firm of jewellers for samples of expensive diamond rings. Fifty arrived, and the Maharaja sent the whole lot to the officer's "good lady," expecting her to keep one or two and return the rest.
