Management of Sporting Events — Unit Overview
Every sports day, inter-house match, or school championship you have watched was the result of careful behind-the-scenes work. Somebody decided the dates, drew up the fixtures, prepared the ground and equipment, invited the officials, managed the money, and made sure the prizes were ready on time. That behind-the-scenes work is what this unit of CBSE Class 12 Physical Education calls the management of sporting events.
The aim of the unit is simple: to move you from being someone who plays in a tournament to being someone who can plan and run one. Along the way you will learn the ideas that make an event fair, smooth and safe — whether it is a small intra-school meet or a large inter-school championship.
What this unit covers
The chapter is built around five connected areas, which you will study one by one:
- Functions of sports events management — the five functions of planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling, applied to a sporting event.
- Various committees and their responsibilities — how the total work is divided among committees, and what each committee does before, during and after the event.
- Fixtures and their procedures — how to draw a knock-out fixture (including byes and seeding) and a league / round-robin fixture (using the staircase and cyclic methods).
- Intramural and extramural tournaments — their meaning, objectives and significance, and how the two differ.
- Community sports — their purpose and the health, social, psychological and economic benefits they bring.
What you should be able to do
By the end of the unit you should be able to describe the functions of sports event management, classify the committees and explain their responsibilities, differentiate between the various types of tournament, prepare knock-out and league fixtures, distinguish clearly between intramural and extramural sports events, and design a simple community sports programme.
This part of the chapter deals with the first two areas — the functions of management and the formation of committees. The fixtures, intramural/extramural and community-sports topics follow in the later sections, all covered at the depth expected in the NCERT/CBSE Physical Education Class 12 syllabus.
