Macro-nutrients are the nutrients the body needs in large, gram-level amounts — carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are the primary fuel, proteins build and repair tissue, and fats provide concentrated energy and help absorb fat-soluble vitamins. A balanced diet needs all three in the right proportion.

Concept understanding — macro vs micro nutrients

Every food is a bundle of chemical nutrients. They split into two groups by the quantity we need:

  • Micro-nutrients — vitamins and minerals, needed in tiny amounts.
  • Macro-nutrients — needed in large amounts and measured in grams: carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

The three macro-nutrients are the "heavy lifters" of the diet: they supply the energy and the structural material the body runs on.

1. Carbohydrates — the primary fuel

Carbohydrates are the body's most readily available energy source, especially for the brain and for working muscles. Foods such as rice, wheat and potatoes are broken down into simple sugars like glucose, which is either used immediately or stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen for later use. Because they are the cleanest and fastest fuel, carbohydrates should form the largest share of daily energy intake.

2. Proteins — build and repair

Proteins are the body's building and repair material. Foods such as pulses, milk, eggs and meat are broken down into amino acids, which are then reassembled into the specific proteins the body needs — muscle fibres, enzymes, hormones and antibodies. Proteins are especially important during periods of growth (childhood, adolescence, pregnancy) and for repairing tissue after exercise. They can be used for energy when needed, but their main job is structural.

3. Fats — concentrated energy and protection

Fats are the most concentrated energy source, providing more than twice the energy per gram compared with carbohydrates or proteins. Beyond energy, fats:

  • help the body absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K,
  • form the membrane around every cell,
  • insulate the body against cold, and
  • cushion vital organs such as the kidneys and heart. …
