Q.Knock-out tournament is also known as _____.

Knockout Tournament Matches

A knockout (single-elimination) tournament has one absolute rule: lose once, and you are out of the competition. Because of this rule, the total number of matches a knockout tournament needs is fixed by a very simple relationship to the number of teams.

The Core Formula

Total Number of Matches = Number of teams − 1

This excludes any separate third-place play-off, which is an optional extra match, not part of the core formula.

Why does this work? Think about what each match actually does: every single match eliminates exactly one team (the loser) and produces exactly one winner who moves on. To go from N teams down to just 1 champion, exactly N − 1 teams must be eliminated along the way — and since each match eliminates only one team, you need exactly N − 1 matches, no more and no less. This holds true whether the tournament has byes, an odd number of teams, or a perfectly even bracket — the logic never changes.

Worked Examples

• 8 teams: 8 − 1 = 7 matches
• 12 teams: 12 − 1 = 11 matches
• 15 teams: 15 − 1 = 14 matches
