Q.The mutual inductance M12M_{12} of coil 1 with respect to coil 2

(a) increases when they are brought nearer.
(b) depends on the current passing through the coils.
(c) increases when one of them is rotated about an axis.
(d) is the same as M21 of coil 2 with respect to coil 1.

Mutual inductance depends only on the coils' geometry, and it is symmetric: M12=M21M_{12}=M_{21}. Moving the coils closer raises the flux linkage, so MM increases. Correct: (a) and (d).

Concept understanding

For two coils, M12=N1Φ12I2M_{12}=\dfrac{N_1\Phi_{12}}{I_2}. Although the current I2I_2 appears in the definition, MM itself is a ratio of flux linkage to current and is fixed by the fields' geometry: the turns N1,N2N_1,N_2, the coil dimensions, the distance and orientation between them, and the permeability of the medium. The value of the current cancels out.

Testing each option

  • (a) Bringing the coils nearer means more of coil 2's magnetic flux threads coil 1, so the flux linkage per unit current — and hence MM — increases. True.
  • (b) claims MM depends on the current. False — MM is a geometric property; the flux is proportional to the current, so their ratio is current-independent. …
