When you compare leaves on the shady side with those on the sunny side of the same plant — or potted plants kept in shade versus full sunlight — the shade leaves are the darker green.
The reason lies in how plants adjust their pigment content to the amount of light available:
- In shade / low light, light is a limiting factor, so the plant increases its chlorophyll content (developing more and larger chloroplasts with more grana per cell) to absorb and utilise as much of the scarce light as possible.
