Heterosporous pteridophytes foreshadow the seed habit by retaining their female gametophyte and developing embryo on the parent sporophyte.

Most pteridophytes are homosporous: they produce a single kind of spore that grows into a free-living, independent prothallus bearing both antheridia and archegonia. A small number of genera, such as Selaginella and Salvinia, are heterosporous instead, producing distinct megaspores and microspores.

In these heterosporous plants, the megaspores germinate into female gametophytes, and the microspores into male gametophytes. Crucially, the female gametophyte in these genera is not released as an independent structure; it is held on the parent sporophyte for varying lengths of time. Fertilisation then occurs, and the resulting zygote develops into a young embryo while it is still attached to, and drawing support from, the parent plant. …
