Heterospory is the production of two kinds of spores (micro- and megaspores); it marks the beginning of the seed habit, as seen in Selaginella and Salvinia.

Meaning:

  • Most lower vascular plants are homosporous (produce only one kind of spore). But a few produce TWO different kinds of spores; this condition is called HETEROSPORY.
  • The two kinds are: microspores - small spores that germinate into the male gametophyte; and megaspores (macrospores) - large spores that germinate into the female gametophyte.

Significance:

  • Heterospory represents an important evolutionary advance because it is the FIRST STEP towards the seed habit (the development of the seed).
  • The megaspore is retained on the parent plant, where the female gametophyte develops and the young embryo is nourished - a precursor of the seed condition seen in higher plants. …
