Direction is the broad guiding function at all levels; supervision is one element of it, overseeing work at the operating level.

Five differences between direction and supervision:

  1. Meaning — Direction is instructing, guiding, motivating and leading employees to achieve goals; supervision is overseeing the work of subordinates while it is being done.

  2. Scope — Direction is wider and includes supervision, motivation, leadership and communication; supervision is only one element of direction.

  3. Level — Direction is performed at all levels of management; supervision is mainly performed at the lower (operating) level by supervisors.

  4. Performed by — Direction is given by all managers to their subordinates; supervision is done by first-line supervisors over the workers.
