Supply elasticity depends on time, nature of the good, storability, cost of changing output, spare capacity and factor availability.

The factors determining the price elasticity of supply of a good (any six):

  1. Time period — Supply is more elastic the longer the time allowed, because producers get time to adjust output (very short run — inelastic; long run — elastic).
  2. Nature of the good — Perishable goods (vegetables, fish) have inelastic supply; durable goods that can be stored have more elastic supply.
  3. Ease and cost of storage — If a good can be stored cheaply and easily, supply is more elastic (producers can hold back or release stock); costly storage makes supply inelastic.
  4. Cost of changing output / spare capacity — If output can be raised cheaply using spare (idle) capacity, supply is elastic; if raising output sharply increases cost, supply is inelastic. …
