Urotropin = (CH₂)₆N₄, made from HCHO + NH₃; used medicinally as a urinary antiseptic and industrially to make RDX.

Formation: Urotropin, also called hexamethylenetetramine or hexamine, is formed by the condensation of formaldehyde (methanal) with ammonia:

6HCHO+4NH3→(CH2)6N4+6H2O6\text{HCHO} + 4\text{NH}_3 \rightarrow (\text{CH}_2)_6\text{N}_4 + 6\text{H}_2\text{O}

Structural formula: It has a cage-like (adamantane-type) structure, with four nitrogen atoms at alternate corners of the cage, connected to each other through six –CH₂– (methylene) bridges:

(CH2)6N4(\text{CH}_2)_6\text{N}_4

(each N is bonded to three CH₂ groups, and each CH₂ bridges two N atoms, giving the symmetric cage.)
