Urotropine is hexamethylenetetramine, (CH2)6N4(CH_2)_6N_4, made by condensing formaldehyde with ammonia.

Urotropine, also known as hexamethylenetetramine or hexamine, has the formula (CH2)6N4(CH_2)_6N_4 — a cage-like heterocyclic compound in which four nitrogen atoms are bridged by six methylene (CH2CH_2) groups.

It is prepared by the condensation reaction of formaldehyde (methanal) with excess ammonia:

6HCHO+4NH3→(CH2)6N4+6H2O6HCHO + 4NH_3 \rightarrow (CH_2)_6N_4 + 6H_2O

This reaction proceeds through a series of imine/aminol intermediates that cyclise to give the cage structure, with water being eliminated at each condensation step.
