By combining Planck's photon energy and Einstein's mass-energy relation for a photon, de Broglie extended the wave-particle duality to all matter, giving λ = h/(mv).

de Broglie proposed that just as light (normally wave-like) shows particle character (photons), matter particles (normally particle-like) should also show wave character.

Step 1 — photon momentum: For a photon of frequency ν\nu, its energy is E=hνE = h\nu. Since a photon of energy EE has momentum p=E/cp = E/c (from Einstein's relativistic relation), and ν=c/λ\nu = c/\lambda:

p=Ec=hνc=hλ  ⟹  λ=hpp = \frac{E}{c} = \frac{h\nu}{c} = \frac{h}{\lambda} \implies \lambda = \frac{h}{p}

Step 2 — de Broglie's hypothesis: de Broglie postulated that this relation between wavelength and momentum holds not just for photons but for any moving particle of mass mm and velocity vv, whose momentum is p=mvp = mv: …
