Discovery: X-rays were discovered by the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895, while studying the effects of passing electric current through gases at low pressure — he noticed that a nearby screen fluoresced even when the discharge tube was covered, revealing a new, highly penetrating type of radiation.
Properties (any two):
- X-rays are electromagnetic waves of very short wavelength (roughly 0.01 nm to 10 nm), lying beyond the ultraviolet region of the spectrum, and travel with the speed of light in straight lines; being uncharged, they are not deflected by electric or magnetic fields.
- They possess high penetrating power — they can pass through substances that are opaque to ordinary light, such as flesh, wood and thin sheets of metal, but are strongly absorbed by dense materials like bone and lead.
