X-rays are very short-wavelength, high-frequency electromagnetic waves (about 0.01–10 nm), produced when fast electrons are suddenly decelerated on striking a target, and are noted for their penetrating power.

Wavelength range: X-rays occupy the part of the electromagnetic spectrum between ultraviolet and gamma rays, with wavelengths roughly from 0.01 nm0.01\ \text{nm} (i.e. 10−11 m10^{-11}\ \text{m}) to about 10 nm10\ \text{nm} (i.e. 10−8 m10^{-8}\ \text{m}) — corresponding to very high frequencies and photon energies.

Two properties:

  1. High penetrating power: because of their short wavelength (high photon energy), X-rays can pass through materials — flesh, wood, thin metal sheets — that are opaque to ordinary visible light, which is what makes them useful for medical and industrial imaging. …
