A p-n junction diode's V-I curve is strongly asymmetric: it conducts freely (current rises steeply) once forward voltage exceeds the ~0.7 V threshold, but in reverse bias it carries only a tiny, nearly constant current until breakdown.

A p-n diode is formed by joining p-type and n-type semiconductor crystals; at the junction a depletion region and a built-in potential barrier form. When forward-biased (p-side to positive terminal), the external voltage opposes and eventually overcomes this barrier, so majority carriers flow freely across the junction, giving a large forward current. When reverse-biased, the external voltage adds to the barrier, widening the depletion region, so only a very small reverse saturation current (due to minority carriers) flows — until the reverse voltage becomes large enough to cause avalanche/Zener breakdown.
