Concise notes on matrix multiplication, median and range (answer any two; all three given).

  1. Multiplication of two matrices. Two matrices AA and BB can be multiplied only when they are conformable: the number of columns of AA must equal the number of rows of BB. If AA is of order m×nm\times n and BB is n×pn\times p, the product ABAB has order m×pm\times p. The element in the ii-th row and jj-th column of ABAB is obtained by multiplying the ii-th row of AA with the jj-th column of BB and adding: cij=∑k=1naikbkj.c_{ij}=\sum_{k=1}^{n}a_{ik}b_{kj}. Matrix multiplication is associative and distributive but not commutative in general (AB≠BAAB\neq BA).
  2. Median. The median is the value of the middle item when the observations are arranged in ascending (or descending) order; it divides the distribution into two equal halves. For nn ungrouped values the median is the (n+12)\left(\dfrac{n+1}{2}\right)th item when nn is odd, and the average of the n2\dfrac{n}{2}th and (n2+1)\left(\dfrac{n}{2}+1\right)th items when nn is even. It is a positional average, unaffected by extreme values.
  3. Range. …
