Henri Fayol's fourteen principles of management are broad, flexible guidelines for effective administration.

Henri Fayol, the father of modern management, laid down fourteen principles of management:

  • Division of Work — splitting work into specialised tasks increases efficiency through expertise.
  • Authority and Responsibility — authority (right to command) must be matched by responsibility (obligation to perform); the two should be balanced.
  • Discipline — obedience to rules and agreements is essential; it requires good superiors and clear rules.
  • Unity of Command — each employee should receive orders from only one superior to avoid confusion.
  • Unity of Direction — one head and one plan for a group of activities having the same objective.
  • Subordination of Individual Interest to General Interest — the interest of the organisation must prevail over personal interest.
  • Remuneration of Employees — pay should be fair and satisfactory to both employees and the organisation.
  • Centralisation and Decentralisation — there should be a proper balance between concentration and dispersal of authority.
  • Scalar Chain — a clear line of authority from top to bottom, with the gang plank allowing a short-cut in emergencies.
