The urethral meatus is the external opening of the urinogenital duct where urine (and in males, semen) exits the body.

The term "meatus" in anatomy consistently refers to an opening or passage, and the urethral meatus is no exception. To understand what this structure represents, we need to trace the path of the urethra itself.

In the human reproductive and excretory systems, the urethra serves as the terminal duct — the final passageway through which urine leaves the bladder and exits the body. In males, this same tube also carries semen during ejaculation, which is why it's often called the urinogenital duct (combining urinary and genital functions). The urethra runs from the bladder neck through the pelvic floor and, in males, through the length of the penis.

Now, every tube that opens to the outside world must have an external opening, and that's precisely what the urethral meatus is. It's the visible, external orifice at the tip of the penis in males and just above the vaginal opening in females. This is where the contents of the urethra — urine, or in males also semen — actually leave the body and enter the external environment.

Let's consider why the other options don't fit:

  • Option (A) describes the urinogenital duct itself, the tube, not its opening.
  • Option (B) refers to the ejaculatory duct's opening into the urethra, which happens internally within the prostate gland — nowhere near the external body surface. …
