Although most monocot and several dicot seeds retain endosperm at maturity, orchids are a specific exception whose seeds are non-endospermic.

Double fertilisation in angiosperms produces both an embryo and, in many species, an endosperm that serves as a food reserve for the developing seed. Whether this endosperm survives into the mature seed varies between plant groups.

  • In castor, the endosperm persists and the mature seed is endospermic, or albuminous.
  • In a maize grain, a typical monocot seed, the endosperm is described as bulky, forming the main reserve of stored food and being separated from the embryo by a proteinous aleurone layer — again, a clearly endospermic condition.
  • Coconut, likewise, develops from the same general monocot pattern of seed structure in which endosperm formation is the norm. …
