Decomposition rate depends primarily on the biochemical composition of the detritus and on climatic conditions like temperature and moisture.

Factors regulating decomposition:

  1. Chemical quality (composition) of detritus: decomposition rate depends on the chemical make-up of the plant/animal remains. Detritus rich in lignin and chitin (e.g., woody material) decomposes very slowly, whereas detritus rich in nitrogen and water-soluble substances like sugars decomposes rapidly. Generally, if detritus is rich in lignin and chitin, decomposition is slower; the higher the proportion of these tough, resistant biomolecules, the slower the process.

  2. Climatic factors — Temperature: decomposition is a temperature-sensitive process. It is fastest under warm conditions, since the enzymatic activity of decomposer microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) is optimal at warmer temperatures. Low temperature inhibits decomposer activity, slowing decomposition considerably — which is why organic matter accumulates in cold climates.
