India as a Developing Economy: Key Characteristics
A developing economy is one still undergoing the structural transformation from a low-income, agriculture-dominated economy toward a modern, diversified, higher-income one — as distinct from a developed economy, which has already substantially completed this transformation.
Characteristics of a developing economy (applied to India)
- Low per-capita income relative to developed economies, even where the country's total (aggregate) national income is large.
- Heavy dependence on agriculture for employment, even as agriculture's share of total output steadily falls relative to industry and services.
- A comparatively low rate of capital formation historically — a smaller share of national income saved and invested each year than in developed economies — though India's domestic savings and investment rates have improved considerably over recent decades.
- Population growth that has historically outpaced the creation of jobs, housing and infrastructure, though India's population growth rate itself has been steadily slowing in recent decades.
- Disguised unemployment and underemployment, especially in agriculture, where the same output could often be produced by fewer workers.
- Uneven technology levels — large parts of agriculture and small-scale industry still use comparatively simple technology, even as India has also built genuinely advanced capability in areas like information technology, space research, and modern large-scale manufacturing.
- Unequal distribution of income, wealth, and regional development, with some states and social groups considerably better off than others.
- Improving, but still developing, human-development indicators — literacy, health outcomes, and access to education have all improved sharply since Independence, but continue to lag behind most developed countries on international comparisons.
