Worked Examples · Example 3

Q.The demand function for a commodity is Qd=120−3PQ_d = 120 - 3P, where QdQ_d is the quantity demanded and PP is the price in ₹.

(i) State whether this is a linear function of PP and identify its slope and intercept.
(ii) Find the quantity demanded when P=₹20P = ₹20.
(iii) Find the price at which the quantity demanded is 6060 units.

(i) Nature of the function.

Qd=120−3PQ_d = 120 - 3P is of the form Qd=a+bPQ_d = a + bP with a=120a=120, b=−3b=-3 — a linear function of PP. The slope (rate of change of QdQ_d with respect to PP) is −3-3: for every ₹1 rise in price, quantity demanded falls by 3 units, consistent with the Law of Demand. The intercept (value of QdQ_d when P=0P=0) is 120120.

(ii) Quantity demanded at P=20P=20.

Qd=120−3(20)=120−60=60 unitsQ_d = 120 - 3(20) = 120 - 60 = 60 \text{ units}

(iii) Price at which Qd=60Q_d = 60.

60=120−3P⇒3P=120−60=60⇒P=₹2060 = 120 - 3P \Rightarrow 3P = 120-60 = 60 \Rightarrow P = ₹20 …
