A simple bar diagram (years on X-axis, females per 1000 males on Y-axis; bar heights 945, 940, 936, 921, 918) shows Gujarat's sex ratio falling steadily over 1931-2011.

How to represent the data as a bar diagram:

  • Use a simple bar diagram, since there is one value (females per 1000 males) for each year.
  • On the X-axis, mark the five census years: 1931, 1961, 1991, 2001, 2011, keeping equal width and equal gaps between the bars.
  • On the Y-axis, take a suitable scale for the number of females per 1000 males. Since the values lie between 918 and 945, the scale can start near 900 (with a break) and rise in steps of, say, 10 units, so the differences are clearly visible.
  • Draw five vertical bars of equal width with heights proportional to the values:
YearFemales per 1000 males (bar height)
1931945
1961940
1991936
2001921
2011918
  • Give the diagram a title ("Gujarat: Females per 1000 Males, 1931-2011") and label both axes.

Analysis (this part is also to be done by blind candidates):

  • The number of females per 1000 males in Gujarat has continuously declined across the given years — 945 → 940 → 936 → 921 → 918.
  • Over the whole period (1931 to 2011) the ratio fell by about 27 points, and the decline was sharper after 1991 (from 936 in 1991 to 921 in 2001). …
