Explained here are three items of the Rikli and Jones Senior Citizen Fitness Test: the Chair Stand Test (lower-body strength, scored as reps in 30 seconds), the Arm Curl Test (upper-body strength, scored as reps in 30 seconds with an 8 lb/5 lb dumbbell), and the Chair Sit-and-Reach Test (lower-body flexibility, scored as a distance in centimetres).

The Rikli and Jones Senior Citizen Fitness Test evaluates the functional fitness of older adults — the physical capacity needed for everyday tasks like standing up, carrying objects, and bending down. Below are the procedure and scoring method for three of its six items.

1. Chair Stand Test (Lower-Body Strength)

Procedure: A sturdy, armless chair (seat height about 43 cm) is placed against a wall so it cannot slide. The subject sits in the middle of the seat, back straight, feet flat on the floor, arms crossed over the chest. On the signal "Go", the subject stands up to a full, straight-leg position and sits back down completely — this is one repetition. The subject repeats this as many times as possible in 30 seconds, without pushing off with the hands or arms.

Scoring: The score is the total number of full stands completed in 30 seconds. A stand already in progress when the 30 seconds ends counts as a full repetition. A higher count indicates greater lower-body strength.

2. Arm Curl Test (Upper-Body Strength)

Procedure: The subject sits in the same chair holding a dumbbell in the dominant hand — 8 pounds (3.6 kg) for men, 5 pounds (2.3 kg) for women. The arm starts fully extended, hanging down beside the chair with the palm facing forward. On "Go", the subject curls the weight through a full range of motion up to the shoulder and back down to full extension — this is one repetition. The subject performs as many curls as possible in 30 seconds, keeping the upper arm still against the body (no swinging).

Scoring: The score is the total number of complete curls in 30 seconds. As with the chair stand, a curl already in progress at 30 seconds counts as complete. A higher count indicates greater upper-body strength.

3. Chair Sit-and-Reach Test (Lower-Body Flexibility)

Procedure: The subject sits on the front edge of the chair with one leg extended straight, heel on the floor, ankle flexed to 90 degrees, and the other foot flat on the floor. Keeping the back straight (no bouncing or jerking), the subject reaches forward with both hands, one on top of the other, toward the toes of the extended leg, and holds the maximum reach for 2 seconds. …
