The Central Dogma of molecular biology describes the normal one-way flow of genetic information: DNA replicates itself, DNA is transcribed into RNA, and RNA is translated into protein.

Proposed by Francis Crick, the Central Dogma summarises how genetic information is used within a cell:

  1. Replication (DNA -> DNA): DNA makes an identical copy of itself, ensuring genetic information is faithfully passed to daughter cells.
  2. Transcription (DNA -> RNA): the genetic information encoded in a gene's DNA sequence is copied into a complementary messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule.
  3. Translation (RNA -> Protein): the sequence of bases in mRNA is decoded, three bases (a codon) at a time, by ribosomes and tRNA, to assemble a specific sequence of amino acids into a polypeptide/protein. …
