The carbylamine (isocyanide) test is positive only for primary amines (aliphatic or aromatic); secondary and tertiary amines give no reaction.

RNH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH (alcoholic, heat) -> RNC (foul-smelling isocyanide) + 3KCl + 3H2O
