Determinant Evaluation Using Identities
Expanding a 4×4 or 5×5 determinant term by term is painful and error-prone. The smarter route is to transform the determinant into an easy form using properties (the "identities") that change its value in a known, controlled way — then read the answer off a triangular matrix.
The geometric intuition
A determinant measures the signed "volume" of the box spanned by the rows in n-dimensional space. Sliding one row parallel to another doesn't change that volume; swapping two rows flips its sign; scaling a row scales the volume. The algebraic identities are just these facts translated into rules.
The three row (or column) operations
- Swap two rows: det→−det (sign flips).
- Scale a row by k: det→kdet (the factor comes out).
- Add a multiple of one row to a different row (Ri→Ri+λRj, i=j): det unchanged.
The identical rules hold for columns. There is also row-wise linearity: if a row is a sum Ri=Ri′+Ri′′, the determinant splits into the sum of two determinants with all other rows fixed.
Row-wise linearity is not det(A+B)=detA+detB — that is false. The splitting works one row at a time.
The strategy
- Use operation 3 to create zeros in a row or column (value unchanged).
- Factor out common factors with operation 2.
- Swap rows if needed to reach upper-triangular form (track the sign change).
- The determinant is then the product of the diagonal entries.
Worked example

Concept: Minor and Cofactor definitions; property that sum of products of elements of one row with cofactors of another row equals zero.
Step 1 – Minors
For element aij, the minor Mij is the determinant left after deleting row i and column j.
- M11=054−7=0(−7)−4(5)=−20
- M12=614−7=6(−7)−4(1)=−46
- M13=6105=6(5)−0(1)=30
- M21=−355−7=(−3)(−7)−5(5)=21−25=−4
- M22=215−7=2(−7)−5(1)=−14−5=−19
- M23=21−35=2(5)−(−3)(1)=10+3=13
- M31=−3054=(−3)(4)−5(0)=−12
- M32=2654=2(4)−5(6)=8−30=−22
- M33=26−30=2(0)−(−3)(6)=18
Step 2 – Cofactors
Aij=(−1)i+jMij
- A11=(−1)2(−20)=−20
- A12=(−1)3(−46)=46 …
The problem asks for all minors and cofactors of a 3×3 determinant, then to verify a specific sum equals zero — this is a direct application of the property that the sum of products of elements of one row with cofactors of a different row is always zero.
We have the determinant:
Δ=261−30554−7
Minor Mij is the determinant obtained by deleting the i-th row and j-th column. Cofactor Aij=(−1)i+jMij.
Let’s compute them systematically.

A13=(−1)1+3(30)=30

Second row minors and cofactors
-
M21: delete row 2, column 1 → −355−7=(−3)(−7)−5(5)=21−25=−4
A21=(−1)2+1(−4)=4

A22=(−1)2+2(−19)=−19

M23: delete row 2, column 3 → 21−35=2(5)−(−3)(1)=10+3=13
A23=(−1)2+3(13)=−13

M31: delete row 3, column 1 → −3054=(−3)(4)−5(0)=−12
A31=(−1)3+1(−12)=−12

A33=(−1)3+3(18)=18

Method: Verifying the "Foreign Row-Cofactor" Property of a Determinant
This method verifies the property that multiplying one row's elements by a different row's cofactors and summing always gives zero — a structural fact that also explains why cofactor expansion works along any row.
Steps
Step 1: Compute every minor of the determinant
Systematically find Mij for all nine positions (for a 3×3) by deleting the appropriate row and column each time.
Step 2: Convert every minor to its cofactor
Apply Aij=(−1)i+jMij to each, using the checkerboard sign pattern.
Step 3: Identify which row's elements and which row's cofactors the problem asks you to combine
Read the expression carefully — e.g. a11A31+a12A32+a13A33 combines row-1 elements with row-3 cofactors, which are from different rows.
Step 4: Multiply and sum
Compute the three products a1k⋅A3k for k=1,2,3 and add them.
Step 5: Confirm the sum is zero …
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Combining a row's elements with its OWN cofactors instead of a different row's
Why it's wrong: a11A11+a12A12+a13A13 (same row) reproduces the determinant Δ itself, not zero — confusing this with the "foreign row" combination a11A31+a12A32+a13A33 leads to expecting the wrong value and "fixing" a correct calculation into an incorrect one. Correct approach: carefully check whether the elements and cofactors in the expression to verify come from the same row (expect Δ) or different rows (expect 0).
Mistake 2: A single arithmetic slip in one of the nine cofactors going unnoticed …
