Determinant Evaluation Using Identities
Expanding a 4×4 or 5×5 determinant term by term is painful and error-prone. The smarter route is to transform the determinant into an easy form using properties (the "identities") that change its value in a known, controlled way — then read the answer off a triangular matrix.
The geometric intuition
A determinant measures the signed "volume" of the box spanned by the rows in n-dimensional space. Sliding one row parallel to another doesn't change that volume; swapping two rows flips its sign; scaling a row scales the volume. The algebraic identities are just these facts translated into rules.
The three row (or column) operations
- Swap two rows: det→−det (sign flips).
- Scale a row by k: det→kdet (the factor comes out).
- Add a multiple of one row to a different row (Ri→Ri+λRj, i=j): det unchanged.
The identical rules hold for columns. There is also row-wise linearity: if a row is a sum Ri=Ri′+Ri′′, the determinant splits into the sum of two determinants with all other rows fixed.
Row-wise linearity is not det(A+B)=detA+detB — that is false. The splitting works one row at a time.
The strategy
- Use operation 3 to create zeros in a row or column (value unchanged).
- Factor out common factors with operation 2.
- Swap rows if needed to reach upper-triangular form (track the sign change).
- The determinant is then the product of the diagonal entries.
Worked example
det1472583610.
Apply R2→R2−4R1 and R3→R3−7R1 (no change), then R3→R3−2R2: …
Key idea: the entries of each row add to x+y+z, so fold the columns into the first and factor it out.
Step 1 — C1→C1+C2+C3. Each new first-column entry is x+y+z:
Δ=(x+y+z)111−x+y3yy−z−x+zz−y3z.
Step 2 — R2→R2−R1 and R3→R3−R1:
Δ=(x+y+z)100−x+yx+2yx−z−x+zx−yx+2z. …
Every row adds to x+y+z; folding the columns into the first pulls out that factor, and the leftover 2×2 determinant is 3(xy+yz+zx), giving 3(x+y+z)(xy+yz+zx).
Intuition
The three entries in each row of this determinant add to the same total, x+y+z. That is the signal to add all columns into one column: it turns the first column into a constant you can factor straight out.
Setting up
Δ=3xx−yx−z−x+y3yy−z−x+zz−y3z.
Working the steps
1. Fold the columns in: C1→C1+C2+C3. Row 1: 3x+(−x+y)+(−x+z)=x+y+z; row 2: (x−y)+3y+(z−y)=x+y+z; row 3: (x−z)+(y−z)+3z=x+y+z:
Δ=x+y+zx+y+zx+y+z−x+y3yy−z−x+zz−y3z=(x+y+z)111−x+y3yy−z−x+zz−y3z.
2. Make zeros in the first column: R2→R2−R1 and R3→R3−R1:
Δ=(x+y+z)100−x+yx+2yx−z−x+zx−yx+2z. …
Method: Row-Sum Factoring by Column-Folding
This method applies whenever every row of a determinant adds up to the same expression — the fastest route is to fold all the columns into one to expose that expression as a common factor, then reduce what's left to a 2×2 block.
Steps
Step 1: Check whether every row's entries sum to the same expression
Add the entries across each row separately. If all three sums come out equal to some expression S (often a symmetric combination like x+y+z), that is the signal to use column-folding rather than direct expansion — direct expansion of a 3×3 with mixed-sign linear entries is slow and error-prone.
Step 2: Fold the columns into the first column
Apply C1→C1+C2+C3. Because every row sums to S, the entire new first column becomes S,S,S — a column of a repeated value, which factors straight out:
Δ=S111⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯.
Step 3: Zero out the first column below the top row …
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Folding the wrong columns together
Applying C1→C1+C2+C3 but adding only two of the three columns (or adding rows instead of columns) means the first column never collapses to the common value x+y+z — the factoring step that makes the whole problem tractable is lost right at the start.
Mistake 2: Only zeroing part of a row
After factoring (x+y+z) out of the first column, the operations R2→R2−R1 and R3→R3−R1 must be applied across the entire row, not just the first entry. A student who zeros the first column but leaves the other two entries untouched ends up with a determinant that still doesn't reduce to a simple 2×2 block. …
