For two cells connected in parallel between the same two terminals, applying Kirchhoff's laws at the junction gives an equivalent single cell with combined emf and internal resistance.

Consider two cells of emf ε1, ε2 and internal resistances r1, r2 respectively, both connected between terminals B1 and B2, driving a current I out through the external circuit, with I1 and I2 the currents supplied by each cell (I = I1 + I2).

Let V = potential difference between B1 and B2. Then for each cell (treating them as a source with internal resistance):

V = ε1 − I1r1 ⟹ I1 = (ε1 − V)/r1

V = ε2 − I2r2 ⟹ I2 = (ε2 − V)/r2

Total current: I = I1 + I2 = (ε1 − V)/r1 + (ε2 − V)/r2 = (ε1/r1 + ε2/r2) − V(1/r1 + 1/r2)
