Let AB be a plane wavefront incident on reflecting surface MN at angle i, striking first at A. In the time τ the wave from B takes to reach the surface at C (BC = vτ), a secondary wavelet from A (which arrives at the surface first) has already spread out over a sphere of radius AE = vτ into the same medium. The reflected wavefront EC is the common tangent to all such secondary wavelets from points between A and C.
