Lymph performs three main functions: returning tissue fluid (with proteins) to the blood circulation, transporting absorbed dietary fats, and defending the body via its lymphocytes.

Lymph (tissue fluid) is a colourless fluid that seeps out of blood capillaries into the intercellular spaces and is collected by the lymphatic system. Its important functions include:

  1. Drainage/fluid balance: Lymph drains excess interstitial (tissue) fluid, along with plasma proteins that have leaked out of blood capillaries, back into the blood via the lymphatic vessels, thereby helping maintain the volume and pressure of circulating blood and preventing accumulation of fluid in tissues (oedema).
  2. Transport of digested fats: In the small intestine, lymph vessels called lacteals absorb digested fats (as chylomicrons) from the intestinal villi and transport this fat-rich lymph (chyle) into the blood circulation — a route not available to blood capillaries directly. …
