What is lymph:
As blood flows through capillaries, some plasma (minus most large proteins and red blood cells) leaks out into the surrounding tissue spaces, forming interstitial (tissue) fluid. Some of this fluid is picked up by tiny, blind-ended lymphatic capillaries and carried through the lymphatic vessels back toward the bloodstream; once inside these vessels, it is called lymph. Lymph is colourless (or pale yellow), contains lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell), but lacks red blood cells and has a lower protein content than blood plasma.
Functions of lymph:
- Fluid balance: returns excess tissue fluid (and any leaked plasma proteins) back into the blood circulation, preventing fluid build-up (oedema) in tissues.
- Fat transport: in the small intestine, specialised lymphatic capillaries called lacteals absorb digested fats (as chylomicrons) from the villi and carry them into the bloodstream, bypassing the liver initially. …
