Lymph is a colourless fluid, similar to blood plasma but with less protein, that drains from tissue spaces into lymphatic vessels and eventually back into the blood; it plays roles in fluid balance, fat transport, and immunity.

Formation:

As blood flows through capillaries, some plasma (along with dissolved substances) filters out through the thin capillary walls into the spaces between cells. This filtrate is called interstitial fluid or tissue fluid. Lymphatic capillaries, which lie close to blood capillaries in the tissues, pick up this tissue fluid — once inside the lymphatic vessels, it is called lymph.

Composition: Lymph resembles plasma in composition but contains much less protein. It contains lymphocytes (white blood cells) but no red blood cells or platelets.

Functions:

  1. Drains excess tissue fluid back into the blood, maintaining fluid balance.
  2. Transports absorbed fats from the small intestine (via specialised lymphatic vessels called lacteals) into the bloodstream.
  3. Carries lymphocytes and antibodies, playing a key role in the body's defence against infection. …
