The overall process of respiration in humans can be broken down into the following steps:
- Breathing (Pulmonary ventilation): air is alternately drawn into the lungs (inspiration) and expelled from the lungs (expiration), through the coordinated action of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, which change the volume (and hence pressure) of the thoracic cavity.
- Diffusion of gases at the alveoli: in the alveoli (air sacs of the lungs), oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air into the surrounding blood capillaries, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveolar air, driven by differences in partial pressures (pO2 and pCO2) across the thin alveolar-capillary membrane.
- Transport of gases by blood: oxygen is transported mainly bound to haemoglobin in red blood cells (as oxyhaemoglobin), with a small amount dissolved in plasma; carbon dioxide is transported partly dissolved in plasma, partly bound to haemoglobin (as carbamino-haemoglobin), and mostly as bicarbonate ions in the plasma.
- Diffusion of gases between blood and tissues: at the tissue level, oxygen diffuses from the blood into the tissue cells (where pO2 is lower), and carbon dioxide diffuses from the tissue cells into the blood (where pCO2 is lower in blood than in the actively respiring tissue).
- Utilisation of O2 by cells (cellular respiration): within the cells, the oxygen delivered is used in mitochondria to oxidise food (glucose, etc.) via cellular/aerobic respiration, releasing energy (as ATP) and producing CO2 as a byproduct, which is then carried back to the lungs to be expelled — completing the cycle. …
