Meiosis II is a mitosis-like division of the two haploid cells produced by meiosis I, in which sister chromatids separate to finally yield four haploid daughter cells/gametes.

Meiosis II begins in the two haploid cells formed at the end of meiosis I (telophase I/cytokinesis), and proceeds much like an ordinary mitotic division, though starting from a haploid rather than diploid chromosome number:

  1. Prophase II: This is a relatively brief stage. The nuclear membrane, if reformed after meiosis I, breaks down again, and the spindle apparatus is organised to prepare the chromosomes for the second nuclear division.
  2. Metaphase II: The chromosomes (each still consisting of two sister chromatids joined at the centromere) align at the equatorial plate (metaphase plate) of the cell, with the spindle fibres from opposite poles attaching to the centromere of each chromosome.
  3. Anaphase II: The centromere of each chromosome splits, and the sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles of the cell — this is the step that, unlike anaphase I (which separated homologous chromosomes), separates the two chromatids of each chromosome. …
