a) Mosses show a dominant, photosynthetic, free-living gametophyte. The gametophytic plant body has two stages: a creeping, branched, filamentous protonema stage that develops directly from a germinating spore, and an upright, leafy stage that develops from a secondary protonema produced by budding off the primary protonema. The leafy stage bears male (antheridia) and female (archegonia) sex organs at its apex. The sporophyte is differentiated into a foot, a seta, and a capsule, and is dependent on the gametophyte for nutrition; the capsule produces spores by meiosis, which on germination form the protonema, completing the life cycle. b) Sphagnum (a moss) is used commercially as a source of peat, which serves as a fuel; it is also widely used as a packing material for the trans-shipment of living plant material and other delicate items because of its high water-holding capacity, and is used in horticulture to improve soil water retention.
