Meiosis is the reductional division that produces haploid gametes from diploid germ cells; its significance lies in maintaining a constant chromosome number across generations and in generating genetic variation.

1. Maintains the chromosome number of the species:

Meiosis reduces the chromosome number by half — a diploid (2n) germ cell produces four haploid (n) daughter cells (gametes). When two haploid gametes (one from each parent) fuse during fertilisation, the diploid (2n) chromosome number is restored in the zygote. Without this halving, the chromosome number would double every generation.

2. Generates genetic variation:

  • During Prophase I, homologous chromosomes pair up (synapsis) and exchange segments of genetic material through crossing over, creating new combinations of alleles on each chromosome.
  • During Metaphase I, homologous chromosome pairs orient randomly at the equator, and their independent assortment into the two daughter cells creates many possible combinations of maternal and paternal chromosomes in the gametes. …
