The endoplasmic reticulum's chief functions are lipid synthesis (SER), protein synthesis and processing (RER), intracellular transport, and mechanical support of the cytoplasm.

The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is a network of membrane-bound tubules, vesicles and cisternae that pervades the cytoplasm, and exists in two forms with distinct functions:

  • Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER): lacks ribosomes; the principal site of lipid (and steroid hormone) synthesis. In liver cells, SER is also important in the detoxification of drugs and poisons.
  • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER): studded with ribosomes on its outer surface, giving it a "rough" appearance; the site of protein synthesis for proteins that are to be secreted or sent to other organelles (these proteins are packaged into vesicles and transported to the Golgi apparatus for further processing). …
