RER carries ribosomes and synthesises proteins; SER lacks ribosomes and synthesises lipids/steroids and helps in detoxification.

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER):

  • Has numerous ribosomes attached to the cytoplasmic (outer) surface of its membrane, giving it a 'rough' or granular appearance under the microscope.
  • Because of the attached ribosomes, RER is the principal site for the synthesis of proteins that are to be secreted, inserted into membranes, or sent to lysosomes.
  • Often appears as flattened sacs (cisternae), especially abundant in secretory cells (e.g., pancreatic cells).

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER):

  • Lacks ribosomes on its surface, giving it a smooth appearance.
  • Mainly tubular/vesicular in structure. …
