The mitochondrion's distinctive double-membrane structure — especially its cristae-folded inner membrane — directly supports its main function: producing the bulk of a cell's ATP through aerobic respiration.

Structure (as would be drawn and labelled on a diagram):

  • Outer membrane — smooth, permeable, and forms the outer boundary of the organelle.
  • Inner membrane — thrown into numerous finger-like or shelf-like folds called cristae, which project into the interior and greatly increase the surface area available for embedded enzyme complexes and electron-transport-chain proteins.
  • Perimitochondrial/intermembrane space — the narrow space between the outer and inner membranes.
  • Matrix — the fluid-filled interior enclosed by the inner membrane, containing the enzymes of the Krebs (citric acid) cycle, mitochondrial DNA (circular, like a bacterium's), 70S ribosomes, and RNA — features that support the endosymbiotic theory of mitochondrial origin.

Functions:

  • Mitochondria are the principal site of aerobic cellular respiration, where pyruvate (from glycolysis in the cytoplasm) is fully oxidised via the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain (embedded in the cristae) to generate large amounts of ATP through oxidative phosphorylation — earning mitochondria the nickname "powerhouse of the cell."
  • Because they carry their own DNA and ribosomes and can divide independently by fission, they are described as semi-autonomous organelles. …
