Figure — The stem asks to draw a labelled diagram of a mitochondrion; the canonical longitudinal-section mitochondrion

A mitochondrion is a rod/oval-shaped, double-membraned organelle whose inner membrane folds inward as cristae to increase surface area for ATP synthesis; its key labelled parts are the outer membrane, inner membrane, cristae, intermembrane space, and matrix.

A text-only description is given here (a hand-drawn figure cannot be produced in this format), covering everything a labelled diagram of a mitochondrion should show:

  1. Outer membrane: A smooth, continuous membrane that forms the outer boundary of the mitochondrion; it is fairly permeable, allowing small molecules to pass through freely.

  2. Inner membrane: Located just inside the outer membrane; it is much less permeable and is thrown into a series of infoldings.

  3. Cristae: The infoldings of the inner membrane, which project into the matrix. Cristae greatly increase the surface area available for the electron transport chain and ATP synthesis. Small, stalked particles called F1 particles (oxysomes), which contain the ATP synthase enzyme, are studded along the cristae membrane.

  4. Intermembrane space: The narrow fluid-filled space between the outer and inner membranes.
