[!TLDR]

The Krebs (citric acid) cycle occurs in the mitochondrial matrix. Acetyl CoA (2C) condenses with oxaloacetate (OAA, 4C) to form citrate (6C) via citrate synthase. Citrate is isomerized to isocitrate, which is oxidatively decarboxylated to alpha-ketoglutarate (5C, releasing CO2 and forming NADH), which is further oxidatively decarboxylated to succinyl-CoA (4C, releasing CO2 and forming NADH). Succinyl-CoA is converted to succinate, generating one GTP/ATP by substrate-level phosphorylation. Succinate is oxidized to fumarate (forming FADH2), hydrated to malate, and finally oxidized back to oxaloacetate (forming NADH), regenerating the cycle. One turn of the cycle (per acetyl CoA) yields 3 NADH, 1 FADH2, 1 ATP/GTP and releases 2 CO2; since one glucose gives 2 acetyl CoA, the cycle turns twice per glucose molecule.
