The nephron, the structural and functional unit of the kidney, is made up of a filtering Malpighian corpuscle followed by a long renal tubule with four regions: PCT, Loop of Henle, DCT, and the collecting duct.

Since this text-based format cannot render an actual drawing, here is the complete labelled structure a student should draw and annotate, in the order blood filtrate flows through it:

  1. Malpighian corpuscle — located in the cortex, made of:
    • Glomerulus — a tuft of capillaries formed from the afferent arteriole (wider than the efferent arteriole, maintaining high filtration pressure).
    • Bowman's capsule — a double-walled cup-shaped structure that encloses the glomerulus and collects the filtrate.
  2. Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT) — a highly coiled region lying close to the Malpighian corpuscle, in the cortex; site of major reabsorption of glucose, amino acids, salts and much of the water.
  3. Loop of Henle — a U-shaped structure with a descending limb (permeable to water, dipping into the medulla) and an ascending limb (permeable to electrolytes but not water, returning to the cortex); crucial for concentrating urine.
  4. Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT) — a coiled region in the cortex, involved in selective secretion and further reabsorption; opens into a collecting duct. …
