Question of 145

Q.In the given figure a ship is sailing along the line shown in the figure. In its route it passes through two islands A and B whose coordinates are (100, 300) and (400, 700). Distances are in km. On the basis of the given data, answer the following questions:

(i) Find the equation of the path.
(ii) If the ship is sailing at the speed 25 km/hr, find how much time it took from Island A to B.

The ship's path is the straight line through A(100,300) and B(400,700); the travel time follows from the distance between them and the given speed.

  1. Equation of the path: Slope m=700−300400−100=400300=43m = \dfrac{700-300}{400-100} = \dfrac{400}{300} = \dfrac{4}{3} Using point-slope form through A(100,300)A(100,300): y−300=43(x−100)y-300 = \dfrac{4}{3}(x-100) 3(y−300)=4(x−100)3(y-300) = 4(x-100) 3y−900=4x−4003y-900 = 4x-400 4x−3y+500=04x-3y+500=0 Check with B(400,700)B(400,700): 4(400)−3(700)+500=1600−2100+500=04(400)-3(700)+500 = 1600-2100+500=0 ✓
