Degrees of freedom count the independent ways a molecule can move and hence store energy — translational, rotational, and vibrational.

Degree of freedom: The total number of independent quantities (coordinates) required to completely specify the position and configuration of a dynamical system (such as a gas molecule) in space is called its degrees of freedom. Equivalently, it is the number of independent ways in which the system can absorb or possess energy.

For a gas molecule, degrees of freedom can be of three kinds:

  • Translational: motion of the molecule's centre of mass along the 3 independent (x, y, z) axes.
  • Rotational: rotation of the molecule about independent axes (relevant for molecules with more than one atom).
