Kinetic theory models a gas as a huge number of tiny, constantly-moving, non-interacting particles that only briefly exert force on each other (and the walls) during elastic collisions — everything else about gas behaviour (pressure, temperature) is derived from these assumptions.

The assumptions of the kinetic theory of gases are:

  1. A gas consists of a very large number of identical molecules in continuous, random motion.
  2. The molecules are treated as point masses — their own size is negligible compared to the average distance between them and the volume of the container.
  3. Molecules exert no force on one another except during a collision (no intermolecular attraction or repulsion between collisions).
  4. Collisions between molecules, and between molecules and the container walls, are perfectly elastic — kinetic energy is conserved in a collision. …
