Capillarity is the rise or depression of a liquid surface inside a narrow tube, caused by surface tension; the height risen is h=2Tcos⁡θρgrh = \dfrac{2T\cos\theta}{\rho g r}.

Step 1 — What is capillarity?

When a narrow ("capillary") tube is dipped into a liquid, the liquid level inside the tube rises above (for a wetting liquid like water in glass) or falls below (for a non-wetting liquid like mercury in glass) the level outside. This phenomenon, arising from surface tension and the liquid's angle of contact with the tube material, is called capillarity.

Step 2 — Formula for the rise.

For a liquid of surface tension TT and density ρ\rho, rising to height hh in a capillary tube of radius rr, with contact angle θ\theta between the liquid surface and the tube wall:

h=2Tcos⁡θρgrh = \frac{2T\cos\theta}{\rho g r}

where gg is the acceleration due to gravity.

Step 3 — Interpretation. …
